    Proprietary Printer Driver

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on an IBM Thinkpad with an Epson Stylus Photo R800 printer. I am trying to print some color photos with the latest Gimp. The problem is that the Gimp’s driver is grossly deficient for this printer. It can’t reliably control the choice between portrait and landscape mode. Even worse, it can’t tell me which of the printer’s eight ink cartridges is out of ink.

I have checked the Epson web site, and it offers no Linux driver, only those for Windows and Apple. Does anyone have any idea how to deal with this problem (I am not prepared to write my own driver). Since I use the laptop largely for handling photos, I will have to get rid of Ubuntu and reinstall Windows XP if that is the only way to control the printer.

    Re: Proprietary Printer Driver

If the standard linux drivers are not satisfactory TurboPrint supports R800. However it is commercial software, with a free trial.
