So when I close my laptop lid, it presses a little button that triggers the screen to go blank. But when I open it back up, it stays black! Any ideas?

What brand of laptop is is? What version of Ubuntu are you running?
It's a Dell Latitude D500 with 10.04 Beta 1.
What is it set to do when the lid closes? Check in System > Preferences > Power Management. If it's trying to suspend you may need to google and/or search these formus for ways to fix suspend issues with a Latitude D500.
Also remember 10.04 is still beta, so kinks are still being worked out.
Its set to blank screen. And by the way, suspend works nicely!
Strange, I've never heard of the basic "blank screen" option having any problems. So does the system lock up and you have to reboot? If you press Ctrl+Alt+F2 does it take you to a text login prompt? If so try Ctrl+Alt+F7 and see if that brings the gui back.
Didn't work.
