    External HDD Remounting

I've been having a problem recently where my external hard drive wants to remount after it has gone idle for a while. If I am copying information to/from it or accessing files on it is is fine, but if I let it sit there doing nothing it will eventually unmount quickly and then I will hear the drive spin up and it will remount. If I leave the drive on over night I am left with dozens of /media/ folders open.

    I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit.

Any ideas? I searched but didn't see anyone else having similar problems.

Have you made a entry for it in fstab?
I can't say I've heard of a problem like yours before, but if it's mounted through fstab Ubuntu don't have to made a mount-point for it.

No I have not. This has been a problem that has come up recently though. I have used this external harddrive for a couple of years no problems. Might that still be the problem?

I reformatted the external harddrive into NTFS filesystem. It was in Reiser. It made no difference. However, I did try unplug the drive that had been causing me problems last night and had anothe plugged in all night. No problems with the other.
