DVD rip MP4 on HD screen

Hey all

I've been backing up my dvd's to my HDD and converted them to MP4 (handbrake)

Since I'm going to buy a new screen soon wich probably will be HD
so now i'm wondering how will the quality be of those dvd rips on a HDscreen?

and will it look better if i just put a dvd in the dvd drive and play it full screen?

Well if you have a friend who has a HD screen my best suggestion is to try this out at him, i can't possibli suggest you to download HD content from the internet, because that would be fraud...

haha lol I've tried it (a trailer) but that just took too long

and i don't have HD screen to test! aargh! might just look for a friend with an HD screen *-)

The original dvd will always look better, but you don't want to store 6 to 8 gig files on your hard drive.

I've been using ffmpeg to encode to h264 in mp4 container with -crf 20 or 21. I get files around the size of 800MiB to 1.2GiB depending on the length of the movie. I also encode at the original video resolution of 720x480/1.777 aspect or 720x352/2.35 aspect. My videos at that rate factor (crf 20-21) look VERY close to the original dvd and look really nice on my 46 inch Sony Bravo. They're not HD, but they do look nice.

New edit: (a really late one) MP4's ripped by Handbrake with good quality still look good on 1080P screens!
