    Re: Looking for Ubuntu Mentor

I have started partitioning the first pc. the partitioning is as following: 8 Gb swap, 50 Gb ext4 data section/no flags, / 10 Gb and in that order. This way I can make a disk image of / which is small and will be stored on the server and it will move across the server quick enough. Then I will go through and partition all the lap tops using puppy linux. Then I will copy the disk image of / onto all the / partitions on all the laptops. Then I will install grub2 on each machine so that they can boot. with the / being at the end of the partitions i can easily expand it if need be. the 50 Gb data section can be used for the administrator to back up the image of / and if the server goes down then the users can store everything to /temp.

this will save time and i will save time not having to figure out FAI. reading the manual was a mind bender. I think i may have to create a flow chart for that one.

    Re: Looking for Ubuntu Mentor

8GB SWAP is, to me anyway, way overkill. Even on my little Acer laptop with 256MB RAM I only have 2GB SWAP.

I'd set it up 10-20GB / (depending on how many applications you'll be running 10GB is ok for a standard install but 20GB will take alot), 2 GB SWAP, and do whatever with the rest, even if it is a /home. You never know if the students can't access the server for some unknown reason they can still save their work in /home.

I'm in and out all the time but will answer or help whenever I can.

I went with the large swap, a 50 Gb data partition for me to backup / images, and at the end a 10 Gb /. The rest of the drive is left blank. the drives are 320 Gb hard drives so i can expand / quite easily using puppy. having a small / will allow me to have a small image. i can then set a usb to boot with puppy linux write a script that installs the / image and grub2 in the right locations. then setting up each pc is a breeze.

Angry Re: Looking for Ubuntu Mentor

My next problem: i am trying to deactivate the mouse touch pad on the client lap top that will be the image to use on all the others. i spent almost the entire day sifting through forums and tring fixes, editing all sorts of config files, trying different gui pointer setting device.

i need to shut them off because the students get very frustrated when they are typing and the cursor is moved and clicks on a different spot in the active window.

Does anyone have any ideas? i am almost ready to physically rip them out of each computer. each computer is outfitted with an optical mouse.

here are some things i have tried:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...cs/+bug/132627
    http://www.andrewferrier.com/blog/20...-ubuntu-10-04/

    i have tried editing xorg.conf

nothing seems to shut it off.

Have you tried Mouse Preferences? System > Preferences > Mouse.

Not being smart but if the kids get frustrated with a touchpad they will get even more frustrated when the optical mouse stuffs up.

i have tried. this problem is off the hook. the touch pad is not synaptics like most pads so it does not use any sort of normal driver. also with 10.04, most hardware is autodetect now, so there are no config files that you can use to change functionality for devices. i am ready to tear them out with an acetylene torch and some pliers.
