Bottom line is that there is hope. In the form of chain-booting grub or flashing the bios (the latter being a little too risky imho). I was planing to look into chain-booting more but my own boot priorities have to be tended to first.*pun* The time to figure it out will show up sooner or later.
Laptops: S76 Panp5, HP tc4400
Other: numerous old desktops/laptops running ubuntu or puppy linux
