Once you get that extra room, you find uses for it real quick. Eventually, if you need to go back to a smaller display, you feel cramped and confined.
But in my opinion, having multiple monitors is more important than having one big monitor. Whenever my desktop machine is working (ahem,) I have a 19-inchwideshortscreen LCD plus a 17-inch CRT. Neither of these monitors is anything special, but together you get a lot of room at a reasonable price.
Using the 27-inch iMacs at the local University library seems vacuous and empty to me. I really don't like having multiple windows visible at the same time (no idea why, it just doesn't feel right,) so with a bigger monitor, past a certain point, I actually get less information per square inch.
But with two monitors, I can maximize two windows at the same time. For me, this is great, and it literally doubles my productivity. Also, check out this video:

I use a Wal-Mart brand HD TV as a monitor, 36" No video card as of yet. Very nice picture, I'll never go under 24 again! LOL!
