Question Novice needs help copying CDs

wow, I taught programming and windows for over 25 years. Now that I'm retired I thought I'd have the time to learn Ubuntu. All alone. From what I've seen so far, I don't know if I have the time to figure it out. I definitely need help. I'd better google up "how to learn Ubuntu". I suppose there's a "Ubuntu for Dummies" available.

I have 9.10 Koala running. I have one CD drive, working. Right now I would like to make a copy of a few CDs for backup. I've been told I need Graveman or some other utility but can't get a clue yet on how to proceed. Any one care to talk me through it?

    Thanks, Chuck

Have you tried Applications > Sound & Video > Brasero > Disk Copy ?

Brasero is the included CD/DVD burning application.

If you find Brasero doesn't do what you want, many people recommend K9copy, installable via System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager.

Edit : just saw your post above

    Good to know.

okay. I found it, but won't need it now. Thanks.

Theoretically, how SHOULD I have found these two programs without wasting other people's time?

you can always look in synaptic package manager and search for what you want. If it has the green box beside it, it is already installed (some may be command line programs and not show up in the menu) You can look at descriptions of the programs in synaptic and also sometimes get a screenshot (only if it is gui based though).

You can also do the same thing in Software Center.

There is a free book for download that you might find useful.

Don't think you are wasting peoples time asking questions, that's the whole reason for these forums existing.

It is considered good practice to try and find the answer first by eg, using your favoured search engine with your search terms plus the word Ubuntu, eg "cd burning ubuntu" - then ask it.

There aren't many problems you will come across that someone hasn't already experienced, and the answer will be out there somewhere.

you could also check youtube for tutorials. there's quite a few of them there. I've found answers there a lot, and with a video tutorial it makes thing a lot easier to follow.

its an often overlooked source for stuff like this.
