    Gimp Only Saves as .xcf

I just finnished making an avatar with GIMP and now I cant save it as jpeg or png. I can hit the drop down menu to select a different file type to save it as and I can select it, but soon as I hit save it changes the extension back to .xcf and than saves it. GRRR! Anyone know why?

The .xcf is the default extension to salve a file in Gimp. With the .xcf file you can modified your picture with any problem (conserve layers, etc) . If you selected .jpg, .png, etc, the file is compress to that format and don't permit to get again the layers, etc.
