I don't think there are any universal conventions on installation procedures across Linux distros. Each one has its own installation procedures, however there are similarities in the installers used by distros which are closely related to each other.
As far as I know, most Linux distros today prefer GRUB, a few might still use LiLo.
There might be a lot of distros that still use GRUB Legacy.
All or if not almost all prefer if you install their boot loader to MBR, especially if you're using GRUB, because GRUB is an excellent boot manager.
Ubuntu does allow you to chose what hard disk of partition you would like to install GRUB to, but you need to read an installation how-to to see how to do that. It isn't obvious to the uninformed.
