    0 A.D. - RTS Game

    Hi everybody,

My name is Aviv and I am a contributor to a free, open-source RTS game called 0 A.D. that is in development and is set to run on Linux, among other operating systems. It's not a playable game yet, but it runs on Ubuntu without too much fuss. Installation or build instructions can be found here, here, here and in many other places.

I was directed here by Chris Tozzi from WorksWithU, and I gather from this thread that the game has been discussed and generated interest around here before. (Thanks!) I'm posting here to find out if any of you guys are interested in contributing to the project. We would love to have new contributors join the effort.

    General info:

0 A.D. (pronounced "zero ey-dee") is a free, open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game of ancient warfare. It's a historically-based war/economy game that allows players to relive or rewrite the history of Western civilizations, focusing on the years between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D.

This ambitious project involves state-of-the-art 3D graphics, detailed artwork, sound, and a flexible and powerful custom-built game engine.

The game has been in development by Wildfire Games (WFG), a group of volunteer, hobbyist game developers, since 2001. The code and data are available under the GPL license, and the art, sound and documentation are available under CC-BY-SA. In short, we consider 0 A.D. an an educational celebration of game development and ancient history.

    Contributing to 0 A.D.:

    We are looking for:

    • OpenGL Programmers
    • AI Programmers
    • Gameplay Programmers

Read this for more information about each opening and for instructions how to apply.

Edit (December 11, 2010): The latest version of 0 A.D. is available for download for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

Also, let me know if you have any questions, suggestions etc. Thanks!

    wfgJeru,

The game sounds promising. I'm not much of a programmer yet, but hoping to start learning soon. Are there any other positions you guys need help with that wouldn't require explicit programming skills? Either way, good luck with what looks to be a very promising endeavour

I have been keeping my eye on this game for a long time... I truly wish I could help, but unfortunately I'm no programmer

I hope you will find the people you need... The best place to ask is the freegamer forums, where many game developers hang out

Re: FOSS game 0 A.D. seeks more developers

I am not much of a programmer yet, plus never worked with AI or OpenGL. But I did some modeling and web-design. If you ever need something like that, I would be happy to help.

Best of luck to your project.

Yes. As explained in our application form, we also need:

    • Sound effect specialists
    • Texture artists
    • 3D artists
    • Animators
    • Web developers (jQuery, PHP, MySQL)

Talking Re: FOSS game 0 A.D. seeks more developers

I can offer my skills as a text editor; I have a good eye for misspellings, grammatical errors, etc. I might also be able to contribute to a manual once I've played a bit. I don't have much to offer in terms of programming skills, though...

oldrocker99, thanks for that post, that's a really neat idea. You're welcome to drop by at our forums, we do need plenty of help documenting the game on our Trac system and making existing documentation easier to use. It could make a really big difference.

Get the game running on your system and talk to the programming team if you are interested.
