Okay, on a DVD I own, there's a cartoon of my namesake headbanging to a Zakk Wylde tune. I want the "Headbanging Shake" to become an animated gif (No, I won't use it as my avatar... here...)
How does one go about doing this?

If the sequence is not too long you could probably take a couple of screenshots from the movie and arrange them to an animated gif in Gimp. Or you could find a program that does it for you if such a thing exists...
I ended up half doing it in Ubuntu, half in *******...
I found a great little program called "DVDRIP" (I think...) and I was able to take the sequence I wanted and turn it into an AVI file.
Then I booted into win, put the .AVI sequence in JASC Animation Shop, and create my .gif...
And here it is:
EDIT: If I find out how to do it 100% in Ubuntu, I'll write a howto

I bet you could do that with CinePaint. (available with apt-get near to you )Originally Posted by Master Shake
CinePaint huh? Never heard of the program, but I have to look at it now. Thanks for the tip!

Hmmm, I havent tried this myself and extra steps might be needed but something like this might work:
Use something like dvd::rip to get segment. Make sure the output is an .avi.
Import .avi in Gimp using the avi plugin. Every frame will be imported as a seperate layer.
Remove any layers you don't need. Export the rest as .gif.
Groet, Erik
ok this is what i did, put the DVD in your PC and open it with anything that lets you move the movie along by frame. Take a screenshot of a few frames, then arange them in order. Its up to you to put them to gif, im just switching from windows to linux. So all i know is Photoshop, hope this was of some help to you.
AVI plugin you say? Hmm, there really is a lot I don't know about The Gimp... I'll check it out tonight.

The problem with that is the animation won't be as fluid as if you could convert the DVD to the .GIF just for the reason that you'd have to be pretty darn fast taking screenshots.Originally Posted by _-HEX-_
