Simply have another old system collecting dust, and want to put the best NON-ATI pci graphics card in it, that will allow 3d, and still work well with Ubuntu for TV, and and gaming.
So what PCI graphics cards ended up on top before it moved to agp?
AGP was boss for about 15 minutes. Today's hot video cards use PCI Express.
Something along the lines of this card:

might be a reasonable compromise between price and performance. It doesn't support HDMI, (HDTV) though.
The combination of "old computer" and "PCI video card" doesn't match "gaming" in my books.
Just needed info on what PCI graphics cards, non-ATI, ended up 'on top' performance wise, that would still run fine on 9.10, allowing good 3D, (as good as the card allows, not what the current 'gaming state' requires).
Length of time AGP was in use, HDMI, and PCI-E being used today are irrelevant.
Don't care about 'compromise between price and performance' either.
