Gutenprint can't install in Karmic 64

Alright. This was my first attempt at compiling a program from source. Maybe I should have picked something easier but I am trying to install gutenprint (formerly gimp print)so I can use my new Epson scanner/printer.
    I did
    cd. to the folder
    .configure
    make clean
    make
when I get to install I get
    install: missing file operand
    What is operand?
    how do I get it?
Should I remove this thing and start over?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
