I am going to put this lap-top aside, FOR THE TIME BEING. IF Anyone else out there who wants to make suggestions on how to fix these problems, feel free....
Please ad to this string at any time in the future.
Something tells me this will not be the last computer with these sorts of booting problems.....

Boot the laptop with the livecd.

Use it and a usb stick to copy any files you need from the hard drive.

Buy a new harddrive and reinstall.
