Something funny going on with startup disk creator

I have a Kingston Data Traveller 4gb, which I use mainly for distro testing.
To make sure it's clean with no conflicting files, I always make a new partition table and format it as Fat32 before I use it.

Today though, while trying to burn an Ubuntu iso, weird things happen. Sometimes it'll "finish" in a few seconds, and weirdly all the files will be there but they'll all be empty.
    Sometimes this happens [See attachment]
Sometimes it seems to work, but when I boot it on my netbook, it just says "Operating system not found", or skips straight over it.

    Any ideas what's going on?
