Lightbulb HOWTO: Latest Nvidia Drivers- on Dapper Drake

Hi, I've ported my guide about the Nvidia Drivers to Dapper Drake on the USDF.
http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper

Or on the Official Wiki:
Latest Nvidia Dapper

The guide works ONLY for driver 8756 and 8762 (Method 2)

I need your help in order to:

1) test if the methods work for you (I'm particularly keen to know if Method 2 works for everybody)

2) test which of the 2 Methods (Draugen's or Stormbringer's) to install 32 bit compatibility libraries works better for you
(this is for Ubuntu 64bit users ONLY)

3) find typos or bad errors

4) gather suggestions to improve my guide

5) Test the script below (for automating Method 2) NEW!

Thanks in advance for your help (which I promise to give you back )

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Script to make Method 2 faster

NOTE: this can be dangerous and buggy

This script will download the Nvidia installer (and all the files the installer needs) and set the driver for you.

Get to the following website:
http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

And follow the instructions you will find there.

The scripts will install the Nvidia driver 8774 and 7184

NOTE: the script currently REMOVES your RESTRICTED MODULES.

You might want to mention how to get the 'Geforce4 420 Go' to work. I had to manually edit the /etc/modprobe.d/options file. See my posts at the nVNews Forum: here (1) and here (2). The procedure was identical to that in Slackware, only Ubuntu puts the options in another file.

Attached my options and xorg.conf files.
Attached Files
File Type: gz options.gz (258 Bytes, 371 views)
File Type: gz xorg.conf.gz (1.1 KB, 471 views)

Thanks, this might really be a great contribute to all the users who own the same card model as yours.

I'll add it to the Problems Section.

EDIT: DONE!

A minor typo for those who "cut and paste" -
Method 2 / Step 4 should read --purge.
Thanks for the great howto!

Thre drivers on nvidia website need a patch to work with 2.6.15 kernel.
Plus I had to copy some files from one folder to another to make X work.

Does that patch exist? If it does, I would love to know where I can get it.

Hm, I solved it without patching. I changed xorg.conf to load some additional graphic-moduels.

Have a nvidia geforce4 mx 4000 & tried method 1. Got no complaint that i saw. However the lcd does not work. It says no signal. The crt monitor now works when it didnt with the nv drivers. Is the 4000 like the 420/440? Anyone got this graphics card to work and/or where is the patch for 2.6.15 TIA
