looking at some reviews and the looks of linux mint, i would think linux mint was the more popular distro. it's more stylish and just looks cooler. why is ubuntu "better" than linux mint?

This sure looks like a flame thread, hopefully it won't get into one
Ubuntu maybe popular because the bigger crowd and Canonical is behind it, and it is managed the good way. I do not know who is behind Linux Mint, but Ubuntu just got to be more mainstream. It could have happened with Mandriva or Fedora, but it was just Ubuntu I guess (:

Linux mint is Ubuntu .. with a different face and a the added "restricted extras" and codec packages in the package manager and a bunch of other stuff REMOVED.
It is a fine "baby step" Ubuntu build for newbies as the restricted drivers are already there and will install. But it is not as flexible as far as "rolling your own" or customizing.
I have it on an old and slow box, and it is ideal for that box as I do not use it for anything complicated. I reserve that work to Ubuntu.
Linux Mint couldn't exist without Ubuntu is most probably the reason.
Mint is essentially ubuntu. Plus the guy who made mint aired his political views and "recommended" that those who disagreed didn't use mint.
heres a link; You might need to post a link for that, for clarification.
