    Question Must Have Software List

Hey there unbuntuites (is there a collective noun for ubuntu users?),

I'm a slow convert, i've been tinkering with Linux for what feels like forever (2003 to be exact, Fedora got me in to Linux) I have since switched over to Ubuntu after struggling with drivers for my laptop with the latest spin of Fedora (i figure Ubuntu has a larger userbase thus more likely to have drivers).

To cut to the chase, i'm asking you if you have any recommendations as to software that i can't possibly live without.

Short of irssi and vlc i'm pretty much at a stock install here, so there is plenty of room for improvement.

    Thanks in advance,
    AⱯA

    I like pidgin (Instant messaging)
Wine (Run Windows programs in ubuntu)
VirtualBox (visualization software, so you can run other OS's within Ubuntu)
    VLC (of cause)

If you are a developer eclipse is a great IDE.
bpython (If you are into python)

This is what I usually install first.

I think Cheese, PlayOnLinux, Audacity, Neverball, Hulu Desktop, Handbrake, GNOME-do, and the Amazon MP3 Downloader are the necessities for me!

I used to use Pidgin, but Empathy integrates with the built in notifier, so i really am willing to go with the new interface.

Are there any other programs that work with the notifier like Empathy? Perhaps one for GMail or Facebook etc.?

Pidgin works with Gmail and Facebook and I haven't really tried any other ones because pidgin does everything I need.

Ahh this old debate. I've tried both and as flashy as KDE is, Gnome is just more functional. Sorry , but that's just my opinion.

The distinct advantage of Linux is CHOICE. You can try to your hearts' content .. if you don't like it, un-install it! Simple as that. Since Linux does not use a convoluted rats nest .reg file, there will be no traces left .. plus, you won't have to de-frag the drive after a bunch of installs and removals!

Go get the list of "substitute" programs from any Linux site and have at it. FUN and you learn as you go WITHOUT destroying your basic operational setup!!
