Ubuntu ( particularly Gnome ) uses ~ 250Mb of RAM. As far as I know, Windows 7 uses approximately the same amount.
Using less resources means it loads less in RAM, and runs less processes. From what I've seen, running windows and ubuntu on the same computer, ubuntu definitely uses less resources. I know ubuntu has less system requirements than vista and 7 and possibly the same as XP, though ubuntu it will run faster than xp.

running less resources means that the computer gets less hot right and thus, eats away less of the laptop battery/power? 'cuz when i'm on ubuntu, my laptop gets hotter than when on windows 7. or maybe it's because i'm using wubi...

Yep.
It's only got 2 programs installed, and I disabled quite a few services.
Maybe the final version is better..
check if there is any problem with your laptop's fan -
i saw somewhere on the net (more than a year ago, it might have already been fixed) that certain laptops have problem with the fan speed on ubuntu (probably linux in general, can't remember)
mine is way colder when on ubuntu, 7 makes it get too hot some times (and too noisy :S)
Your computer running hotter could because of software that windows uses to mange the temperature and fan speed. Try changing fan speed in BIOS.
