best distro for realy old laptop

    I've got a relay old laptop,(win 95 era)
    133 MHz processor
    32 mb ram
    1.7 gb hdd

i was thinking about giving it to a friend and disited win 95 wasn't going to cut it.
i am most likely going to have to go with puppy, but i would rather go the ubuntu rough if i can get it to run smooth, what do you think is the newest version I could get to run smoothly?

    any suggestions are appreciated thanks.

That is going to need a real lean GUI. Have you thought of or tried DSL (Damn Small Linux)?

Yes, it is. It got its name by being and keeping the distro installation at 50 meg. They even have a book out about it with some ideas for using it. I have it installed on an old 450 mhz laptop and it works pretty well there.

    You can get it here.

I haven't used Puppy so I can't compare the two. Maybe someone else that has will pitch in.

you must have an gui? if not, try FreeDOS.

    if not, look here http://distrowatch.com/

choose according to description and put an old style gui onboard like the early guis used in the mid 90s.

    look for guis here: http://apcmag.com/how_to_declutter_y...s_compared.htm

I was looking at the 1st link above: Tiny Core looks interesting.

You also might try compiling a special mix just for the hardware, thereby stripping it down to the barest elements necessary. Seems like a fun project for tinkering.
