files missing on usb harddisk but still take up space

ok I bin ruing Ubuntu for 3 years now and gust got my first crash. I have a 200 GB usb hard disk and it has to partition one etx4 50 GB and the other fat32 150 GB and the files are missing in the fat32 partition but still take up space I tried

    sudo /sbin/fsck.vfat -a /dev/sdb1

    But it hags at

FATs differ but appear to be intact. Using first FAT

And the blue LED lite on the drive stops flashing inactivating that there is no disk use.
I also tried gprated but but it gets stuck at lodging the drive partition.
I have to way to much important data to lose on the drive
If anyone knows how to get the data back I'd like to know how
    I'm running 9.10
