    Should XGL be present? Should xset q reveal the location of the log file? Should there be a software rasterizer? And should there be an 8bit GLX pixmap format?

    **edit: Something else I'll try later - maybe it's the GTK theme breaking stuff (Shiki-Colors) - shouldn't be, as it's available in normal Karmic repos now, but who knows... ?
    ...output is normal.
    The Shiki-theme...yes,who knows.
    If not,llawwehttam's post seems useful..(post #9 of linked thread),

    So to clarify, I should try removing my nvidia driver? And would that simply mean re-installing nvidia-glx-185 in Synaptic?

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

    First I would see if installing the shiki-colors-theme in your vanilla "tester" account causes same error..
    edit:
    Second I would install the latest nvidiadriver 195.xx (as said before it is real better)...

    Re: Fudged working Dual Screen setup (nVidia)

    shiki-colors makes no difference in the tester account - I even tried mucking about with CCSM settings to try to get it to break, but no 'joy'...

    So downloaded the latest nvidia driver, and when I try to drop into Ctrl+Alt+F1 it gives a blank screen...

    ???
    when you try to install it or after installing??

    Re: Fudged working Dual Screen setup (nVidia)

    Sorry, I wasn't very clear. As far as I'm aware, the best way to install the driver is to drop into a terminal and stop gdm from running before you install, but I don't get a terminal when I Ctrl+Alt+F1, so not sure how to go about installing.

    Re: Fudged working Dual Screen setup (nVidia)

    Have you logged out before Altctrlf1?

    BTW,if running karmic you can add the 195 driver by:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa

    and install it:

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-195-modaliases nvidia-glx-195

    without dropping to shell...

    Re: Fudged working Dual Screen setup (nVidia)

    That sounds a lot easier!

    But then:
    Code:
    $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-195-modaliases nvidia-glx-195

    Re: Fudged working Dual Screen setup (nVidia)

    Heh. And now when I do compiz --replace, I get:
    Code:
    $ compiz --replace
    Checking for Xgl: not present.
    xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    Detected PCI ID for VGA:
    Checking for texture_from_pixmap: Segmentation fault
    not present.
    Trying again with indirect rendering:
    Checking for texture_from_pixmap: Segmentation fault
    not present.
    aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
    Oh dear.
