Xubuntu randomly crashes, mouse still responds

OK, I managed to actually get Xubuntu to install, unlike the previous time!

Here is what happened....

1. Installation went smooth. Restart.
2. Log on, start Firefox, close it, wait a few seconds, crash.
3. Restarted, it's now in a higher res. Ok, used an xterm to install LXDE. Reboot.
4. Log into LXDE, play around, crash.
5. Restart, repeat, use Firefox, after a while of browsing, crash.

The mouse still responds to movement though....
The person this was intended for uninstalled it afterwards. (it was with Wubi) I'd like to fix this. Any suggestions would be nice. :/

i have the same problem like you. xubuntu 910 and with old computer celeron 2G and 512m on Intel chips of 845gl.

it seems that i have already solved this problem.
1. i installed the backports with "sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic"
2. i shut down the screen saver
3. i shut down the "cpu frequnce control"

i was just installing xubuntu 804 on it, and running without problem.
X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90
