    I cannot open my system monitor in 9.10 with compiz (or with it disabled!) it opens and closes instantly!
    anyone can help?

    Try starting it from a terminal and see if you get any error messages.

    Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal

    top is a standard commandline alternative to gnome-system-monitor .

    htop is a really nice commandline alternative to gnome-system-monitor .

    sudo apt-get install htop
