Formatting External Drive and Choosing A File System

No, not on an external. Get rid of it if you like. I did two months ago, no problems.

On the drive that ubuntu is installed on, it's wise to have a reserve. If the drive is say 100 GB then 5 GB is a bit much, 2 GB would be fine. On a 20 GB drive then 5% should be left alone.

i have two external and internal drive going, how do i make sure it does it to the right one?

I just looked at your last screen shot of Gparted. It's sdb. External 0%

I can never remember if it needs to be ...../sdb or sdb1

first i would do some searches in forums and in google. with such a basic and common problem, the answer is probably already out there

I suggest you go to the Networking & Wireless sub forum, in there at about the middle left of the page will be a greyish box that says New Thread, click it.
