Post Strange - Sound volume changes itself

I have fresh copy of ubuntu 9.10 x64
    Everything was ok.

i installed skype and was still on.
than I found out that system mic volume is changing itself.
especially "capture" is going to zero and even if i want to push
volume up - i can't. auto levels in skype are off.
every time i start system there is different volume.

    - what's happening ?

Re: Strange - Sound volume changes itself

I have this same problem. Except mine presents itself when I change my volume on the task bar the volume for PCM turns up to 100. This causes distortion and a ringing sound. I have to start alsamixer and lower the pcm volume. It will also change the levels of my surround, center, and front speakers. Sometimes but not all the time it will turn my master down to low levels while it turns everything else 100 percent.

    I have X-Fi soundcard.
