    Problems Installing VMware

I am having issues installing vmware on my ubuntu server 8.04

i am following the guide http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=779934

i have updated the linux headers using apt-get install linux-headers-server

i then change dir to my vmware and attempt to install vmware.pl and get the error

WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.28.4-xxxx-std-ipv4-32: No such file or directory
FATAL: Could not open /lib/modules/2.6.28.4-xxxx-std-ipv4-32/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory
Unable to open kernel module dependency file
    .Execution aborted.

    Re: Problems Installing VMware

We'll need some more info to help out, but off the bat here's a couple things:

    install the build essential package:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential

when you run the install-vmware.pl, are you using:
    sudo ./install-vmware.pl

You dont say in your post, but I assume you are probably installing VMware Server 2.0.x?

    Re: Problems Installing VMware

I have the same problem installing VMware Server 2.0.2

The installer asks where my linux headers are installed and says that it needs to configure itself to work with my present kernel.

Then, I accept the defaults and get the following message:

Same problem I had. See the link below, this fixed the issue for me and many others as well!
