I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 which is around 4 years old now and I've had CentOS, Ubuntu and Fedora all running on it at various stages over the years and it's been flawless.
If you're looking for a second hand Dell laptop to install *nix on, go Inspiron.
I have 2 machines:
Precision M6300, Dual-Core, 8GB Ram, nvidia quadro, 256GB SSD. Currently running 10.04 LTS and looking at where to go next (12.04 or something else)
Precision M6600, 8core, 16GB Ram, nvidia graphics, 3x256SSD, 1x128GB mSata card. Currently running SLES 11 SP2 due to business requirements :-/
I've got a PowerEdge 850 (server) and an Optiplex 860 both running 12.04...
Studio XPS with 12.04 with ATI graphics. I've been running Ubuntu since buying it and have recently installed/upgraded to 12.04. What a great machine and 12.04 makes it fly!
Dell XPS 15
