extra monitor causes X server crash

Hi all,

I was hoping for some help troubleshooting a little problem that has come up.

I have found that the X server seems to crash at unpredictable intervals when I have a second monitor plugged in.

it's a Dell M1330 and I am running:

Ubuntu 9.10
Gnome 2.28.1
Nvidia drivers v185


I can't identify exactly what it is that makes it crash, but when it does I am dropped to the tty1 login prompt before the gdm restarts.

Could someone tell me where to start looking for the cause, or help me troubleshoot this? It's a real pain, especially due to the completely unpredictable nature.

Actually, this is most likely not related to the second monitor... it's just happened without that monitor being plugged in.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
