karmic networking, I want to start from scratch.

I had my ubuntu machine working properly on the network after my upgrade to karmic. But because of some issues I've recently installed a completely fresh version of ubuntu 9.10 and cannot get the networking to work at all. I've fiddled around and would like to start from scratch (with some help hopefully). Currently I am able to access my Ubuntu shares from other computers, but not able to access anything else from my Ubuntu computer.

Does Karmic come "out of box" with Samba? Is samba still what I should be using for filesharing? Can anyone tell me if I can uninstall and start re-installing some stuff to start from the beginning? Also, are there some default firewall settings I should be working with?
