Thumbs down GRUB2 theming for lucid?

I've come across the following cool stuff about GRUB2 theming:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Burg

This just blew me away: http://ubuntuguide.net/add-os-logos-...enu-using-burg

I tried using the themes without installing BURG but didnt seem to work so I guess its not merged back into upstream GRUB and I need to add the BURG repos.

I am currently trying out the ubuntu2 theme from http://ubuntuguide.net/decorate-grub...der-using-burg but this might also need BURG...

oh well, hoping for some nice boot loader eye candy for lucid - if not official then community based...

UPDATE: For latest install steps, please see: http://code.google.com/p/burg/wiki/InstallUbuntu

The first I head of BURG. Is this a one man show, or is there more dev's envolved?

It looks nice and all, but I only spend 1 second looking at my grub2 menu screen , if that long.

burg uses a modified version of colin bennetts gfxmenu code. the original code has been merged into grub experimental if any brave souls are looking to play with it. it needed a little work the last time i checked but did work ok.
i believe there was a long thread on this during the karmic release (and also in arch) and a few of the screenshots made it onto the grub2 community documentation

actually, i think the grub experimental branch (and so gfxmenu) is in Felix Zielcke's PPA

Yes it is. I was going to ask him the theming status but he's offline at the moment.

Update: This theme site may be better integrated into Ubuntu for the experimental branch of Grub - it's done by one of the Grub 2 devs who works with Ubuntu. Work still needs to be done on themes even here however:

I've left E-mail messages with Bean & Felix about this thread---hope to have one of them drop by & talk about it---I've been waiting for this to get to a testing state for quite a while.....talked to the grub2 developer early in 2009 about it & it showed promise, so I've kept track of it......

Yep, you're right. BURG's menu system is completely differently than Colin's. Colin's menu is basically an extension of existing menu, it just allows you to use fancy image. But BURG is much more, it allows you to control the behavior as well, such as define new keyboard hot-keys. There are also advanced features like customized password dialog, popup menu, multiple terminal window, terminal as edit box, etc.

BTW, binary package for Lucid would be available soon.
