Volume & LAN icons disappeared

So I was trying to set up the icons in the top left corner and removed both the volume and LAN icons as I though I could just add them back in under "Add to Panel...", but I cannot find them there. Can anyone tell me how I can get them back? (On a similar note, rhythmbox doesn't leave an icon in there any more either.)

You need to add the Notification Area to the panel.

This happened alot to me when I first started.
nikgare is right, you need to add the Notification Area to the panel
(right-click > add > Notification Area)
