You have to make sure you're burning them as an Audio CD, not just burning the .mp3 files onto a CD.

If you have a MP3 compatible CD or DVD player, a disk with MP3 files should play. I have done it.

This is probably a stupid question to ask, but are you sure that it's a CD and not a DVD?

I'ts possible the cd player is broken. but probably not

an audio cd can only hold 80 minutes of music. it doesn't matter what quality or how big the mp3's(or other music format) are.
if it burns more than 80 minutes without warning you're probably burning a data-cd.

if you use the cd/dvd creator under accesoiries and drop the files onto the cd it is not going to create a audio cd
you should use the brasero burner under 'Sound & video' and click on the first button 'Audio Project'
when dropping files on the cd you should see 'project estimated size: XX:XX min' on the bottom bar

I am not sure, but it seems like that Brasero can only make Audio CDs. So make sure you have a CD not a DVD.
    What you do is:

    Applications>Sound & Video>Brasero>Project>New Project>New Audio Project

Then click the green + and add your mp3 files. Burn it and play it with the CD player.
