I like Vlc Media Player the most. It is in the repositories.
Hi,
I just installed VLC media player and have found it very good.
To install open System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager
and search for VLC.
If you decide to install it then you can set VLC up to load when you insert a DVD by opening Places->Home Folder->Edit->Preferences->Media tab
Then under media handling select the drop down for DVD video and select Open VLC media player.
VLC will then auto-play when you install a DVD.
Hope this helps.
thanks. i will try this as soon as i can get my ubuntu working. i am having trouble booting
If you don't mind paying a little money Fluendo's DVD player works great. Its fully licensed and supports Dolby Digital.

If you are looking for a free application then VLC is by far the best.
Smplayer is another nice media player that supports DVD menus:

I have just upgraded to 9.10 (had to -- 9.04 would no longer boot) and to my surprise, the default Movie Player STILL does not play DVDs, .MPEGs nor .WMV files on my Toshiba laptop.
Nor does the ever-present Update Manager seem to have a clue this situation exists, nor fixes it. Wierd.
I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. In trying the O/S from the Live CD, playing the sample file locked Movie Player up and I had to pull the plug.
I did have the VLC player installed in 9.04, and it was much better in every respect. Guess I will have to re-install it.

I just want to run modern apps under Mac O/S 9 on a PC. But I can't. So here I am.
