    Need out-of-the-box-functioning multifunction printer

I currently have a Brother MFC 240c printer. Best I ever had. But it finally died. Could only use it on my Windows pc though. Now I want a new multifunction printer that will work with Ubuntu 9.04 without having to mess with all that cups and library crap. I have never gotten a printer to work that didn't work out of the box and I am now to old to try again.
So whats a good out-of-the-box multifunction printer? I would prefer Brother cause I know its good and the cartridges are not as expensive as HP.

Since you prefer Brother, I think MFC-240c should work with both Jaunty and Karmic, at least there is a driver for it in the repositories.

I have a DCP-115c, also needed a package from the repositories, and a tweak, other then that, no complains.

Purchase an HP all in one and use the HPLIP software from the HP website, not from the repos.

You can't go wrong with this combination.

If at first you don't succeed - just buy the company and tell them to make the one you want.

I second that. 99% of all HP printers are plug and play in linux.

But HP is the most expensive cartridges you can get. Isn't there another way?

It costs me $25 for the 2 cartridges I need. I find that is right in line with most other companies. If you buy a printer from any other company besides HP, you are taking a chance on it not working, while HP is pretty much guaranteed to work. It's up to you my friend.

Plus, having the HPLIP software gives you advanced printing options you won't get with any other printer in linux. This alone is worth a couple extra dollars for ink.

If you decide to go non-HP, don't say you weren't warned.

Bought an Epson Workforce 310. It works with 9.10, not 9.04 (go figure).
