Unhappy No sound on headphones in Ubuntu 9.10

I have an ideal sound from internal speakers on laptop with Ubuntu 9.10
But plugging headphones just suppresses audio output. Nothing except silence.
Sound mixer applet shows just internal speaker as output device. No headphone option as it was in 9.04.
    How to fix this issue?
I haven't any problems here in Ubuntu 9.04.

Many posts advice me to use alsa-mixer to fix issue.
But this program hasn't option to manipulate with headphones (see attached)

[SOLVED] Re: No sound on headphones in Ubuntu 9.10

I've found some days ago - my headphone's cable was broken.
    Repaired cable solve the problem.
Recommend to check physical state of your headphones
