    Hal? polling question

I understand that (correct please if i'm wrong) but Hal has something to do with volume polling. Or at least something is in charge of checking periodically the status of drives both internally and externally.

If so, Here's the problem. not a problem as much as an annoyance. Every 20 minutes (or so) my one external drive with open itself in nautilus. I can be working or surfing etc, and up pops nautilus with the contents of that drive as if i opened it myself.

how, o how can i get this is stop? what is responsible for this. I think it's Hal...(darn that guy)

    Re: Hal? polling question

I am by no means an expert, but HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer and is necessary on basically every system out there (well a lot of them anyway), but it is the pipeline for communication between your software even just daemons or what-nots and your actual hardware. So, it shouldn't be causing a problem and if it is, then you are going to either have a hardware problem or need a complete clean install.
