    Educating the Masses

    Hey everyone,

I wanted to get some input from the community for a project I'm working on. I run a company called Open Source Solutions, and the biggest issue I've run across so far is the education.

People just don't know about Ubuntu, or Linux in general. I've been working in IT now for going on four years, and I remember it blew my mind that I graduated with two bachelors degrees, one in business, and another in modern languages, but hadn't even heard of Linux.

So I created a project called Open Source Solutions University. It's a moodle server I host where I will offer free registration and courses. The primary goal is financial for me, of course, as I will offer my clients a 10% discount on service plans in their superusers can pass the courses and get certified.

What I'm curious about is if there's anything you can think to add to the syllabus before I really start hammering out the course content. I'm finishing up getting my CCNA, so after that, OSSU becomes my biggest priority.

There are two branches, UD and US. UD classes are based on the desktop while the US is based on the server side. I only have a syllabus for the Desktop so far, and will need to work on one for the server classes. Here's the UD course curriculum

UD101 - History, Installation, and Basics
    (1)History of Linux
    (2)Installing the Operating System
    (3)Linux Gnome Environment
    (a)Firefox
    (b)Evolution
    (c)Open Office
    (4)Installing and Removing Software

UD201 - EXT Filesystem and Permissions
    (1)Explanation of Filesystem
    (a)NTFS vs. EXT3 & EXT4
    (b)Security Implications
    (c)"Why can't I move file 'X' to 'Y'"?
    (2)Common Document Locations
    (3)Adding Users and Modifying Permissions
    (4)Customizing the Desktop and Sessions

UD301 - Advanced Customizations, Backup, and Applications
(1)Advanced Customizations - Compiz and Effects
    (2)Simple Backup and Restore
    (3)Common Web Applications
    (a)Communications (Pidgin)
    (b)FTP / SFTP
    (c)Torrenting

UD401 - Advanced Maintenance and Administration
    (1)Installing .deb files
    (a)From command prompt
    (b)Through GUI
(2)Use of the Synaptic Package Manager
    (3)Killing Errant / Zombie Processes
    (4)Scheduling Tasks

I will also be revising this curricula for every LTS release. I'm hoping that making this available to anyone who wants it over the internet, and to the local schools, we might be able to bridge the gaps that exist.

    Re: Educating the Masses

    Pick up any Linux/Ubuntu book.

They cover all that and more already without the need to duplicate effort.

Oh, and you can look at the link in my sig too.

    Regards
    Iain

    Re: Educating the Masses

I would pickup a selection of the great Ubuntu books at the local bookstore and decide which was the best (in your opinion) and approach the author regarding using their text as the "book" for your program. This would save you a great deal of work and give you a structure to adapt the courses to.
