    9.10 LiveCD Problem

I have a computer with the following specs:

    Emachines ET1161-05

    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Video Card: NVidia GeForce 6150 SE (nForce 430) (Prerelease WDDM 1.0)
    Processor: AMD Athlon LE-1620 ~ 2.3 GHz
    BIOS: Phoenix - v6.00PG
    RAM: 2 GB
    HD: 160 GB

I have the Ubuntu LiveCD. Every time, the CD boots, but once I get past "Try Ubuntu without changing settings", it runs through the command line, then gives me a black screen with almost like a white/gray smoke. Sometimes, two or three blue lines appear across the screen, but nothing else. I have tried noapic, nolapic, acpi=off, safe mode, irqpoll, pretty much everything I could find.

I bought it for $300 at Best Buy, but this computer is only 6 months old... I really don't see what the problem is.

If anything, it is probably the graphics card, because I saw something about this card before, but I don't remember where. This CD worked on my 8-year-old Windows ME computer, so it is not the disk.

I concur with your preliminary assessment and would explore that further.

If it's only $300, I'm guessing it's a netbook. Have you tried it with Ubuntu Netbook Remix? I doubt it's the video card. I hear good things about NVidia.

It is likely the associated drivers though.

It is not a netbook, it is a desktop.

It seems that Ubuntu 7.10 is supposed to work with this graphics card, so I am downloading that, and then I will get the Linux drivers.

Then, the upgrade to 9.10 should go just fine.

I had a lot of problems with driver support and compatibility with 9.10. That's why I stuck with 9.04.

    Re: 9.10 LiveCD Problem

So far so good. I have Ubuntu 7.10 running right now from the LiveCD with no problems.

I will now try and install this so I can dual-boot, then I will try and upgrade,

    Re: 9.10 LiveCD Problem

Perhaps consider 9.04 as Bradj47 suggested if there are problems.

I will, but I probably won't get much done until tomorrow evening. I will post what I have done tomorrow.
