something's happened to my little netbook & I am at a loss for how to recover.
it began after I tried to install 1) wmctrl and 2) remastersys, having just started happily using both on my desktop computer.
unfortunately, the desktop is running Jaunty, and the netbook, a nifty little eee PC 1000, is running Intrepid, and I'm afraid I may have followed the instructions for Jaunty installing to Intrepid, so maybe that contributed to the problem.
now, when I boot, the screen entire screen blackens as it always did, then (sometimes) the compiz-fusion screen comes up, and then the sort of gold-orange background for gnome takes over before the (automatic) login screen. however, once the login is completed, the screen goes mostly black and then jPilot -- which is set to autostart on bootup -- appears, though it's not in the correct resolution.
moreover, Gnome is "invisible" -- the background is black, taskbar fails to appear at the top -- though Cairo-Dock will flash up, in the correct resolution, and I can start each of the apps on it.
the eee PC has a hardware switch that can control resolutions, but the one it's set to know is too "big," and when I cycle through the available resolutions, they all end up too big.
I've tried booting to recovery mode and
1) uninstalling remastersys with aptitude
2) running xfix (as well as checking the disk)
and probably a couple of other things, to little avail.
if I had to guess I'd say something has set the display kerflooey, but I haven't got much experience fixing ubuntu.
