It seems like I've more or less solved the lagging mouse issue. At least now I can move the mouse around and hit objects without the pointer lagging in a way that it jumps forwards on high CPU load. The solution is on the mouse preferences tab: I turned sensitivity to zero and adjusted the pointer speed with acceleration only. It's a bit difficult to do precise mouse work with no sensitivity, but I guess I can fine tune it so I get a compromize. The lag was never severe during idle and low CPU load, only noticeable during higher loads, and it was irritating not knowing what it was. I guess the sensitivity feature requires some stable CPU time to go smooth.

Red face Re: I don't feel comfortable putting my precious data into an Ubuntu system, because.

I'm one of those newer people who hasn't quite nailed down which version of *buntu I want to stick with, so I have multiple installs, and these are what are currently on my drives:

    Ubuntu 32 and 64 bit,
    Kubuntu 32 and 64 bit,
    Xubuntu 32 and 64 bit,
    Kubuntu Netbook Remix,
    Ubuntu Netbook Remix,
Linux Mint 8RC (yes I know it's mint, but still technically *buntu flavor ^_^),

and all work flawlessly on my 64 bit laptop except that Linux somehow does not support my IDT sound card fully for some reason, making the speakers not work but letting the earphone jacks work perfectly (*shrug* I dunno why it does that). Which is fine because I use headphones anyways because I at times play video games (such as the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War lines) with people getting killed and "blowed-up 'n stuff", so I try to be a polite citizen lol. The only *buntu type issue that I've given up on (for now) is the LXDE desktop. But I'll get back to it as soon as I figure out which of the 64 bit versions of *buntu I like most.

I'm just putting my two cents in when it comes to the 64-bit "it no worky" stuff, because I do a LOT of stuff on 64 bit *buntu platforms from gaming, to music, to video, to office apps, basically everything a college youngster can do (excluding filling my 2 TB drives with massive amounts of free porn like most of the techno geeks I know), and it all works FLAWLESSLY.

I hope you stick around because I once walked away when I got frustrated with 9.04, and if I had stayed and asked around to fix my issues, I would have SO much more *buntu/linux knowledge right now. I kick myself daily for the loss in time.

Why oh why did I not find out that I could build a 4 [8 Gig] thumb drive raid array that runs Ubuntu Linux like a dream and wow my windows friends earlier?

    Stay the course!!!

Well, I've finally decided to leave Ubuntu and Linux for good. This OS/GUI has too many errors and bugs. It's simply not usable at all to me. I'd say that it's more or less a joke. Even though it's free, I still feel like I've been ripped off; as in time.

    This is goodbye for good.

That is your choice. Good luck. Linux is not for everyone.

    Give openbox a go.

You could install crunchbang - ubuntu with openbox already configured.

Following the thread he almost seems Schizoid. He went from almost having it fixed to gone for good in 18 hours.

    Oh Well.

Still best of luck whatever he decides to do. I know I went through a phase of love / hate when I first began to dabble with Linux. I kept coming back though and finally got to the point where I stuck it out and learned what I needed to make it work.

No regrets. Well worth the time and energy I invested.

I noticed that also, but I was trying to be diplomatic about it! He'll be back, when we won't know. But it is safe to say he will be back because all the reasons he decided to give linux a try are still there if he goes back to the same OS as before. Whatever those problems were on that other OS still exist. It'll wear him down little by little AGAIN.
