    Resolution 4 bit

I got this Windows laptop for free cause it isn't working and they wanted me to fix it and keep it.

Here's the prob: the resolution will automatically change to 4 bit and a big size (huge icons), then won't allow me to change back until I restart. Won't change back to 32 bit. I tried an external monitor and it does the same, there for it's not the screen. Is it maybe the card or something else? What should I do?

I thought maybe it was a driver problem. But that's not the case. I'm booting off the Ubuntu 8 install disc right now to format (to see if it runs better than windows) and the screen is STILL messed up. and i haven't even got it installed yet, just running off the disc still. it even messes the screen from BIOS.

What's it's doing is drawing lines across the screen that aren't suppose to be there. Now that I've tried more than one OS, maybe it's the onboard videocard or the cable to the videocard? Maybe it's the connections on the motherboard?
