I'm confused.

I've been running Kubuntu for years now, and have found all audio software and games I've tried to run have all suggested that a real-time kernel is used for the best performance.

Looking at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/linux-rt and https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/linux the versions are out of sync, with linux-rt being left behind.

Several questions:
1. Why do we not use linux-rt as default?
2. What is the performance difference in doing so? Is anyone evaluating this?
3. If the performance difference is being evaluated, where are the current packages for linux-rt? Could there not be a concurrent build of each kernel update with a real-time version?

Any information (be as technical as you like!) is helpful.

Thanks
T
