    Two admin settings-boxes grayed-out

Hi all, I have a brand-new Wild Dog Performance desktop unit, model wilp6, arrived last week with Karmic pre-installed.

I've somehow caused two of my Administration settings boxes to be grayed-out.

My System --> Administration --> Login Screen Settings dialog box is completely grayed-out, and will not unlock when I click on the "Unlock" button.

Also the System --> Administration --> Time and Date setings dialog box is grayed-out, and when I click on the "Click to make changes" button, nothing opens.

I may have caused this by (unsuccessfully) trying to install gnome-shell via the terminal instead of with Synaptic Package Manager.

One other thing: "Network Connections" no longer appears in the Notification area of the top panel.

Basically I'm wondering where the best place to start troubleshooting for such things might be. I may start by de-installing gnome-shell, unless anyone thinks that's not a good idea. Thanks for any suggestions.
