Have you tried Xsane image scanner? It should be installed under graphics. Or you can find it in the repos.

Re: photograph scaning - how to crop an image before scanning

When you run Xsane there is a Preview Window you can open.

To open the Preview window go to the upper menu and choose the drop down menu "Windows" and then check the box for "Show Preview". When the Preview Window opens up, use the "Acquire Preview" button.

The scanner will scan its entire scanning area. However in the Preview Window you can drag a rectangular box around the portion of the image you want to scan. After you set up that box, you then use the "Scan" button in the main Xsane control window and only the part of the image in the box will be scanned.

You will need to adjust the dpi setting based on how large you want the final image to be.
