Brother DCP-110c Scan not working

If your using the DCP-110C and find the scan function not working (XSane will respond with no devices found and the Scan to file will not work from the printer) then there's a simple fix but it can take some time to find all the information so I've put it all in this post.

I found this issue after upgrading from 9.40 to 9.10 so the fix is slightly different for 9.10, i've put both solutions here though.

Download the brscan and brscan-skey files.

You will notice if you install the packages (Brscan first then the Scan key package) you may still not see the device or be able to scan.

You can force a re-install..
Change to the directory you saved the .deb files.
sudo dpkg -i --force-all (name of the deb file)
i.e mine was sudo dpkeg -i --force-all brscan2-0.2.4-0.i386.deb
Then do the same for the skey deb package.

Check the drivers installed.
sudo dpkg -l | grep Brother

For my system I see....

So the drivers are installed, but why can't I scan ?
We're almost done though, we need to change a file to enable the functionality.

For Ubunut 9.10 edit the following file
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules

and add the following two lines at the bottom
# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

If your using Ubuntu 9.04 then the edit this file....
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules

Edit the line
# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0664"

to this...
# libusb device nodes
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ... , MODE="0666"

Either way, save the file and reboot.


lsub will show the Brother device now (it was not showing before although the printer was working fine).

You should fine XSane will now scan and offer all the facilities.

If you intend to use the "Scan to file" function then the skey program will need enabling.

Command is brscan-skey
you can check the scankey can see your scanner
brscan-skey -l
mine shows.
DCP-110C : brother2:bus3;dev2 : USB Active

If you use scan to file on the printer you should see similar to this (in the console window)
scanimage: rounded value of br-x from 215.9 to 215.88
scanimage: rounded value of br-y from 355.6 to 355.567

the file will be sent to /home/yourhome/brscan/filename.

As mentioned before these instructions are in the Brother Solution Center but it took me considerable time to find the final solution due to it being placed over several pages.

I don't know if it is a hardware problem, but I followed everything here to help a friend who owns this printer on karmic and it is just starting with linux, but it didn't work out.

I don't know why but brscan-key -l doesn't return anything. Can you help me to find out what are the possible problems?

I found out what was wrong. I don't know if it has changed since the last posts on the thread but I am supposed to install brscan2 instead of brscan for Brother DCP-110C. After this everything got fine.

Wow dude. I must have gone plodded through 10 go bys before I found your thread and fixed my problem in less than 10 minutes. Thank you so much. I was having a hard time editing that file and your fix was perfect.

EDIT: I connected a brother MFC-8460N printer/scanner.

Thanks, that is a very clear summary. Done all that, and brscan-skey works for my own login (in which I installed the drivers), but not for my wife's login. It's weird what happens:
1, Login as wife
2, Start terminal and enter brscan-skey
3, Enter brscan-skey -l ... nothing reported.
4, Try Scan-to-file anyway
5, Device hangs trying to connect to PC
6, Logout from wife's login and try my own
7, Scanner immediately bursts into life and scans to my ~/brscan folder
(Note - this is even before I have had a chance to run brscan-skey in my account)

If I enter brscan-skey in my login I get a report of the attached scanner, so step 3 is where it all goes worng for my wife's login.

I have a Brother DCP-6690CW, with brscan3 driver, on Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit). Scanning initiated by GIMP (in either logins) works fine.
Grateful for any suggestions.

EDIT: SOLVED!!! Apparently I needed to add all login accounts to the scanner group, as follows...

gpasswd -a username scanner

Just to add to the replies so far, I'm now on 10.10 (actually 11.04 on some machines but my server is 10.10) and completely forgot about my scanner until this week.

The same instructions seem to be valid, I realize I put one or two basic typing mistakes in my first post so apologies for that.

The Steps I did are to install the Brother files as before (cups driver, brscan etc), xsane does not find the scanner and will give an error message.
Simple Scan will show the DCP-110C but will give a nice warning message and force you to quit.

The file I needed to edit was

/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules


First in terminal type

lsusb

This lists the scanner/printer USB ident, in my case it showed

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 04f9:0169 Brother Industries, Ltd DCP-110C RemovableDisk


The bits you need ad the ID 04f9 and 0169.

Next edit the 40-libsane.rules as sudo i.e

sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules

At the end add the following

#Brother DCP-110c
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0169", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Save the file

I just restarted my system to make sure the changes are loaded.

xsane and simple scan both work as expected now.

I think it fair to say there's enough posts on here to get most people working, people have found work around etc for their problems and shared their experiences and this is why Ubuntu succeeds.

It's been more than 5 years since I ran W!nd0wz at home and I still have no need to run it for my day to day tasks.

p.s the scan to file button not working yet on the scanner but since I purchased it I think I've used that twice so it's easier for me to launch xsane or simple scan and do it that way.

I'll perhaps look at it one day .... or not.

Thanks, that worked a treat for my Brother DCP-J315W and I can scan in Simple Scan and X-sane

My MFC-J430W now scans. The Brother scanner driver was installed, per instructions on the Brother site. Ubuntu 11.10 Xsane and Simplescan did not find the scanner. It was only necessary to determine the equipment ID and add the MFC-J430W just as Doublehelix22 did. Thank you so much fatdadkev.

Thanks - just used your method to get my Brother MFC-5890CN working. Very quick and easy.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and I found the following adjustments were needed.

After forcing the driver installation

- For Ubuntu 11.10 edit the following file
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules

and add the following two lines between LABEL="libsane_usb_rules_begin" and LABEL="libsane_usb_rules_end"
# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

If you are using Ubuntu 11.10 then the edit this file....
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules

Edit the line
# ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", MODE="0664", OWNER="root", GROUP="root"

to this

ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", MODE="0666", OWNER="root", GROUP="root"

Hi all,

I'm trying to make my Brother DCP-9010CN work under ubuntu 11.10 (like most you it worked fine with prior install of ubuntu following brother recommendation) and I have the same behaviour as you (Sane or XSane just don't detect the device).

I have tried the fix consisting in declaring the equipment with no luck and I realize after test that it most probably work for usb printer - scanner, right ?

Is there a similar tips for network printer - scanner ?
