Game controllers

I'm considering buying some game controllers off of ebay for use with my favorite emulated games. I'm just wondering: all of the controllers on eBay that look right (playstation style, usb) say that they are for Windows XP/Vista.. some of them say they need DirectX and some don't. Would I be safe buying a few of these (not the ones that need DirectX) and expecting them to work?

They do advertise being 'plug and play' which I would assume means they're using some kind of standard USB protocol and thus I wouldn't need a driver?

Well i dont know about those directx type, mine was simple with plug n play. And yes they works on ubuntu (trough some set up though )

Did the controller work when it arrived? What make / model was it? Any hassles setting up? I'm thinking about buying a controller, so any advice would be great.
