Visual Effects randomly turns off and then stays off

So I had this wonderful problem happen today, seemed to only happen when I went AFK for a coupe minutes. So I step away from the machine for 5 minutes, come back and all of the appz are open on desktop #1 instead of being distributed on all 5 and my visual effects is not turned off. Second time this has happened today and it won't let me turn the visual effects back on, just says: "Desktop Effects could not be enabled" and that's it. Pretty f'ing annoying to say the least, wondering if anyone had any ideas?

I'm running an Nvidia 9800 XT, AMD 3800+ x2 and 2GB of ram

Try running compiz from the terminal. Also, there may be clues in ~/.xsession-errors
