9.10 installation help needed

~ Another absolute novice here desperately seeking help ~

I am an Xp refugee ~ a friend downloaded 9.04 and we (9.04 and myself) lived very happily together for 6 happy months ~ it did all i needed beautifully ~
then ~ I upgraded to 9.10 and there seemed to be a glitch in the upgrade (a java thingy i think) ~ now ~

• I can't download and install upgrades
• I can't install programs from Ubuntu software centre
• I can't watch Utube vids and quite a few others

Any suggestions what i must do?

Can you run this in terminal:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

does that let you update packages?

What program you are trying to install?

* I can't watch Utube vids and quite a few others

You need flash for that.
Run this command and install ubuntu extra packages including flash.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Thanks for the prompt reply ~ have my friend coming over on Saturday and will get him to try what you suggest ~ will let you know how he gets along
